The Atlas is the flagship project of the Prairie Climate Centre, which is a collaboration between the University of Winnipeg and the International Institute for Sustainable Development.
One of the main requirements I had to work on was the ability to read detailed information about the subject matter while being presented with interactive data visualisations and maps related to the text.
Paying attention to two different content types at the same time could be too much to ask of the user but since the data visualisation was directly linked to the text a simple way to interact with the site could make it possible to avoid overwhelming the audience
As a result I focused on scrolling action and trigger points. The navigation is linear top to bottom with main chapters marked in the menu and sub-sections marked with bulleted navigation.
Since the website is based on a predictive weather model all of the information is presented in ranges. The user can directly interact with the graphs and automatically scroll to the corresponding section.
