Enthusiast photographers often like to have assignments to practice their creative muscle with. I've never been good with following through with those, which is why I just bring the camera with me wherever I go most of the time.
A perfect example of a photo opportunity presented itself recently at a music album debut show of an artist, Margaret Howison, for whom my wife created the album art and promo materials. You can see her work here http://abrawest.com/like-a-noise.html.
I did not know Margaret at the time and I had never heard her music but the ambience of the venue at The Good Will, Winnipeg, was great so instead of standing around awkwardly I explored the moment with my camera.
The music, a mix of atmospheric folk and bluegrass, was fantastic and if you are reading this you should check it out at Margaret Howison's official website http://www.margarethowison.com/.
I did not expect to take photos that night and was not prepared, but I think that at the end it was pure energy and enthusiasm about the venue that made the shooting experience enjoyable.
